Dear Friends,
John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, would often start the New Year by reciting this prayer with his preachers and other followers. It was called a "Covenant Prayer", meaning that it was almost seen as a contract, an agreement with God that those who speak these words will do what they are saying in the prayer.
We have several times over the last few years used this prayer to end a sermon or end a service, as we think about renewing the commitment we have to God for the coming year. We won't be doing that in worship this year, but I am offering it to you here to consider, to think about what it might mean for your life, and to pray:
I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,
Exalted for thee or brought low by thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things
To thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.
Grace and Hope to you in this New Year,
Pastor Duane
