Dear Southport U.M.C.,

What a week we’ve had! As we reflected on the waters of baptism last Sunday, I was moved by the way we embraced the call to be God’s beloved people, sent to make a difference in the world. This week, we step forward together on Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, exploring the profound words of Micah 6:8 and Isaiah 1:16-17 in our worship services. We’ll consider what it means to “do justice” in practical and transformative ways.

Our “Caring After Christmas” outreach event on Saturday, January 18th, is a perfect opportunity to put these ideas into action. From 3 to 6 PM, we’ll assemble and deliver care packets to individuals and families in our community who need a little extra support this winter. Together, we’ll show the love of Christ through tangible acts of kindness.

This event is an extension of our worship—a way to carry God’s message of justice and compassion beyond the walls of our sanctuary. Whether you’re packing care packets, delivering them, or praying for those we’ll serve, your participation matters. It’s a chance to live out what Dr. King reminded us so powerfully: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

As we gather for worship, we’ll reflect on how justice, kindness, and humility are not just ideals but ways of living that transform us and the world around us. I can’t wait to see how God will inspire us in both word and action this weekend.

Grace and peace,

Rev. William G. Nickrand
