Mission Trip

For the United States

“For who is greater, he who sits at the table or he who serves?

Is it not he who sits at the table?

Yet I am among you as the One who serves.”

Luke 22:27 (NKJV)

SUMC takes a mission trip each year to Section, Alabama where we work with Upper Sand Mountain Parish. While there, we have done a variety of tasks over the years:

  • worked inside resale stores restocking shelves, painting walls, or even tearing up flooring;
  • "demoed" part of a house, remodeled a bathroom, and installed paneling, ceiling fans, and windows;
  • made jam in the cannery, sorted school supplies, and other ‘smaller’ tasks;
  • spend a lot of time in the community.

Most of our dinners are provided by the community. Dutton invites us to their church for a potluck. (The young adults think it is THE best food they've ever had!) Along with Dutton, we go to another church where they provide a meal and have a church service that we attend. In 2019, Pastor Woody, who is in charge of the parish and the pastor of a church within the parish, ‘stole’ all the young adults to spend time with his youth group at the church.

Due to the increase of COVID in Alabama and in the community we serve there, our next trip will be in 2022. We leave early Sunday morning usually around 8 am and return Saturday afternoon.
